Subject: [*] ASCII images of formatted pages (C)
A thread dealing with producing a formatted TEXT file from
(arbitrary) Macintosh programs appeared in some recent issues of
Info-Mac Digest. The messages making up this thread had the titles:
"ASCII images of formatted pages",
"Document formatting query",
"Problems Producing RFCs",
"Problems producing RFDs (c)",
"Printing to ASCII files"
"RFC Text formatting", and
"WANT Word output to Internet ASCII".
The attached binhexed self-expanding archive contains:
1. "RFC Format dialog" which is a chronology of all the messages
(that I've seen) from the thread (including both those posted to
Info-Mac Digest and those sent directly to me), and my comments
and suggestions based on that discussion. Basically, I recommend
the creation of a new Print2Pict extension (which I call the
"ASCII Page Image" extension) and I propose some specifications
for its operation.
2. a copy of the text version of RFC 1111 as FTPed from NIC.DDN.MIL.
3. a copy of RFC 1111 as edited (by me) to make it a Microsoft Word
document.

(A HyperCard 2.x Stack for creating index cards for cassette boxes)
About 3 years back, I got a HC stack for creating index cards for
cassettes. I liked the layout, and some of the command structure. However,
I hated the fact that it only allowed 2 cards. I wrote a system based on
that one, and used it for a few months. Two complete rewrites later, here's
what we have.
ICL 3.1 is shareware. If you like it, send me money (I'm a poor student, I

Hi,
I just got my registered copy of StuffIt Lite 3.0.5. Inside the disk there are
a few goodies besides StuffIt Lite and StuffIt Expander like StuffIt &
Frontier, CPT2SIT(3.0.3), UnStuff/PC. The last two pieces are not in the
Info-Mac archive as I checked on Mar. 15 '93. So here is the submission for
the first one, CPT2SIP(3.0.3) in binhexed, (StuffIt) self-extracted format.

You also have options to disable notification sound altogether,
to disallow notification alert boxes and to always play a sound

Attention 1.0.1 fixes some incompatibilities with AfterDark and
Carpetbag. It should replace version 1.0.

I sure do. I went through this same loop last summer with my own SE/30 with
a Sony drive. I had to do some research on behalf of my qualified Apple
dealer, natch, but got a free replacement. Now he sounds most
knowledgeable, as I discovered when I phoned him last week in relation to
the firm's machine, until I got to the word "Quantum", whereapon: problem
not known. I thought the Quantum problem was more widely known, but
strangely, nobody has (yet) confirmed it in response to my query last week.
You have until August 15 of this year to swap drives from the affected
batches!
Appended is the 8/91 Apple Service Notice, previously filed as

Subject: AECreateAppleEvent + invalid thePort = crash
Here's a bit of information which might save somebody a heap of trouble...
In System 7.1 (at least), the Random() call requires a valid current
GrafPort. For some reason, the first thing done in the _Random
trap is to get (and use) the value of thePort, i.e., (a5). If
thePort is not valid (like, maybe, it's a null pointer) then the
_Random trap can crash.
Now, here's the kicker: AECreateAppleEvent() calls Random() if you
don't specify any event IDs of your own. So, if you need to send any
AppleEvents when thePort is not valid, be sure to specify all of the
event IDs yourself.
Hopefully, this will prevent somebody else from spending that hour
of debugging time that I just spent...

Subject: Building a little network
Howdy Everyone,
Need some input. I want to create an Appletalk network between my 2
PeeCees, my Mac Plus, and my Appletalk/serial HP DeskWriter.
Once upon a time I heard about a board you could put in your PC that would
make it a node on an Appletalk n. How does this work? I want to do thisis
REALLY, REALLY, REALLY CHEA. I don't want to buy NetWare or Vines or
anything like that. The idea is to do something to the PeeCees (stick a
board in it, load some software) so that they become just like a Mac (just
as far as networking). By this I mean, plug in the cables, turn on file
sharing, and you've got yourself a peer-to-peer network with a shared
print. :-)
So, what do ya say? I know there's a bunch of you out there who have
slapped DOS boxes and Macs together before. Can you help me?
Thanks.

(i) clearly your College Microstore either doesn't know much about ethernet OR
they are simply lying through their teeth to sell you hardware you already
have...
(ii) If the idiots new anything at all about Mac ethernet (or just plain the
way
macs work at all) they might know that mac programs in general don't supply
their own drivers. The drivers are generally system level and are accessed
through specific interfaces provided by the OS. In the case of ethernet, most
programs go through the Comm ToolBox (CTB). The CTB provides a standard way
for
all programs to make use of both driver tools (such as the ethernet drivers
provided by the OS (in the case of built-in ethernet) or by third parties (in
the case of third party ethernet cards) as well as different protocol, server
and client tools. This is very UNlike the dos world where every program has
to
provide it's own driver support for each piece of hardware it might
encounter.
Now, to be fair, it might be the in case (i) that they really mean that you
should buy your RJ45=AAUI=FriendlyNet to thinnet transciever from Asante'
instead of Apple since Asante's tranciever is usually cheaper (via Mail order,
it is about $60 or so.).
In case (ii) I believe there is a version of Telnet that does not use MacTCP
but
instead provides it's own TCP/IP protocol support. They may be all confused
over that issue. In general, for max compatibility, you want to have all your
TCP/IP tools going through MacTCP.
To get the latest version of MacTCP (v1.1.1, which you will need, since you
must
run Sys7.1) you must either purchase it directly from APDA as part of the
MacTCP
Developer's kit ($99), or get it bundled with some commercial software or get
it
through your school if they have paid for a site liscence (and you are
eligible
to take advantage of this liscence). If you are not eligible to get it under
a
cheap liscence, the cheapest way I know of to get MacTCP is to order
VersaTilities from Synergy Software (a truly great software company, btw)
which
is about $59 or so from MacWarehouse & other places. Aside from MacTCP, it
also includes Telnet, FTP client/server and other nifty network tools that any
CTB - aware program should be able to use. To go a little further and get a
nice terminal emulator on top of this stuff, go ahead and get VersaTerm. It
is
lots nicer (IMHO) than NCSA Telnet and comes with all the goodies of
VersaTilities. It is usually about $79.
> Does anybody have any good/bad experiences of using these inbuilt

I use the built-in ethernet of my Quadra all the time. So do zillions of
others. A NuBus card MIGHT do better if it a) has a bigger buffer than the
built-in enet (and I'm am sorry but I don't know how big that is) and b) takes
full advantage of the NuBus advanced transfer modes. Otherwise, the fact that
the built-in enet is directly hooked up the i/o controller in the Centris 650
makes me doubt any NuBus card is going to outperform it.
The problem your friend is having is probably not a problem with the Asante'
card. This complaint usually is a result of the fact that (without the
addition
of AppleTalk Inter-Network Router software [or whatever it is currently
called])
the Mac system cannot have access to both localtalk and ethertalk at the same
time. If you just use the ethernet connection for tcp/ip and not ethertalk,
you
should be able to switch the appletalk network in the Network Control Panel to
local talk and access both the localtalk printer as well as ethernet tcp/ip
services at the same time. If your tcp/ip services are through a gateway via
ethertalk, though, he probably will not be able to do so.
If you wish to use telnet or any tcp/ip services, you will indeed recquire
MacTCP v1.1.1. See above for how to get.
No you should not have kept the Microstore happy. Make your purchases to keep
your self happy. :) This just might be aided by not shopping at the
aforementioned Microstore. You might also want to point out to others the
erroneous/incomplete purchasing info they have provided.
Good luck!

Impulse Technology's "Animals" wasn't specially updated for System 7.1

Its advantage is that it can run apps with write-thro' caching even if
they can't handle the 040's copyback caching. So you still get good
speed out of say Word 4 (if you only use it to open the occasional
doc - there's an almost-free 040 upgrade of Word4 to Word4-and-a-little-bit,

However, I ran into four disk images that my DART 1.5 claimed were bad (error

I believe the problem I had is a bug in DART, that is fixed in a later release

Can some kind soul please email me this updated copy of DART binhexed?

Tell them THEY don't know anything about Ethernet connections. Apple knows
plenty. Buy the Apple transceiver for the appropriate media (ThinNet,
10BaseT, etc). Asante makes FriendlyNet transceivers that used to be
cheaper, but since Apple reduced prices on theirs, the difference is less
than $10. You do NOT need an Ethernet NuBus card.
(ii) NCSA/BYU Telnet 2.5 doesn't have a

It doesn't need one. It uses the standard Ethernet drivers included with
your Macintosh, or MacTCP if that is installed.
Would a NuBus card be any better (a colleague and myself have
>had bad experiences with Asant\'e products in the past---like his SE with an
>Asant\'e card in it refuses to talk to his serial DeskWriter C when

That's not Asante's fault. You cannot have both LocalTalk and Ethernet
active at the same time. Your friend needs to buy something like Sonic
System's LaserBridge to enable him to be able to use both simultaneously.
Do I have to buy a copy of MacTCP 1.1.1 to use the
>inbuilt connection with NCSA/BYU Telnet?
You don't have to buy MacTCP to use NCSA Telnet. If you do not have
MacTCP, 2.5 will use it's own TCP/IP instead. However, the benefits of
MacTCP are many. It is now available for educational purchase for $39.
>Should I have kept the Microstore

Trust me, you did the right thing. When you were trying to get your
network drivers loaded high but couldn't because you couldn't find a
suitable address to locate the EMM386 page frame, you'd wish you'd bought a
Mac. And the Microstore would be telling you the 486 was better because
you "had more control."

The lab where I work is buying a number of Centris 650's, a Quadra

"come with Ethernet." I *think* that all we have to do is buy
transceivers, cable, and a hub to get a 10BASE-T network going. Is
this correct, or am I missing something? And if we want to put our LC
on the network, we just have to buy the Apple Ethernet LC Card and
another transceiver. Right?
Also, what about EtherTalk? I know what it is (Apple's Ethernet
software) and I am pretty sure that I need to be running it on each
CPU on the network. I also know that it comes bundled with the Apple
Ethernet LC Card. But do we need to get separate licenses for each
CPU? I don't see the software package listed in the SRP lists I
have...
If there are any Ethernet gurus out there who would like to offer
advice to a neophyte network administrator, or if anyone could point
me to a source of info (I looked in the archives but didn't find
anything, maybe because I didn't know where to look), I'd be very
grateful.
Please respond directly to me - I'm about two weeks behind in reading

interest.

You'll probably want to update the corresponding dialog to make the

Here is a DIRTY hack that allows HDSetup 7.0.x to format any drive at all.
I'm sure someone can fix the offsets for 7.1, but I won't. All the usual
disclaimers apply. If your drive never works again, it wasn't my fault.
This quick hack works for most drives manufactured by: CDC, Conner,
Miniscribe, Quantum, Rodime, Seagate, and Sony. This hack worked on all the
drives we tested it with. Use at your own risk.
1) Open a COPY of "Apple HD SC Setup" with ResEdit.
2) Open "CODE" ID=1.
3) In version 7.0.1, go to offset +$413A.
In version 7.0.0, go to offset +$411E.
4) Change the two words there
from $222E $0010
to $4E71 $7203
Do NOT make this change if the two words are not $222E $0010.
5) Save your changes.
6) Run HD Setup. All drives covered should be available to work on.
7) After initializing, manually partition to get the maximum storage.
This hack has been tested on HD Setup 7.0 and 7.0.1 on several drives made
by Quantum and Seagate. It is NOT guaranteed to work on prior or future
versions of HD Setup or with brands not mentioned above.
As with all such quick hacks, use at your own risk.
Good luck!

I use Textures V1.5 from Blue Sky Research, and I only use Postscript (no
bitmap) fonts with it. That requires ATM of course, but ATM is real cheap.
My
thesis consists of well over one hundred pages with many illustrations,
including Claris Cad drawings, Igor graphs, Mathematica 3-D bitmaps, to name a
few. I can print a full paper tray worth of thesis directly from Textures
onto
the DeskWriter with nary a hiccup and at nearly full print speed. I have a
Mac
IIci with 20MByte RAM, of which the DeskWriter driver hogs 7 MByte while
printing my thesis.
One incompatibility I do have is when I try to use my Global Village modem
while
printing in the background.
Incidentally, Textures V1.5 has a "Flash mode" where any changes made to the
input file are immediately reflected in the on-screen output. This feature is
terrific for making complicated equations, debugging macros, etc. With it,
anybody can become a TeX jock.

The Kanji World Script module (which permits Kanji text to be entered

In I-M digest no. 58, Kimiaki Nakano asks for pros and cons of upgrading
an LC (or LCII) to LCIII versus installing a 40 MHz PowerCache plus
floating point chip.
I have an LCII that I upgraded with a 40MHz PowerCache plus FPU. I also
have
at work a IIci. Since all reports of the LCIII say that its speed is
virtually identical to a IIci, then making a comparison of the IIci and the
PowerCache seems to be more or less what you want.
I ran the Speedometer benchmark programs. The disk speed and the video
speed of the LCII plus PowerCache were not improved by the PowerCache,
and were a little slower than the IIci. However, the processing speed of
the LCII plus PowerCache is faster than the IIci. It depends what test you
look at, but it ranged from 20% or so to almost 80% faster.
So what's it like in the real world? Both machines are subjectively
much faster than a plain LC or LCII. The LCII plus PowerCache seems
noticably quicker for some things, and about the same as the IIci for
others. So the conclusion is to go for the cheaper one, PROVIDED you are
happy with a 10Mbyte memory limit. If you think you will need more memory
in the future, than the LCIII upgrade allows it but the PowerCache does not.

Dear Sir/Madam
I am planning to buy PowerBook with FPU. So my choice will be PB180 or

However I haven't seen PB165c's display and don't know how it is.
My main purpose to use PB is for using WP, Spread sheet and science
caliculation by MatLab and Mathematica.
Please tell me your opinion which is the better display PB180's active matrics

Subject: Performa vs. 'real' Mac
A friend sent me a copy of Murphy Sewall's March '93 "Vaporware" column,
which included a notice that Apple is about to issue an updater for system
7.1. (Apparently this news comes from MacWeek, 8 February.) He goes on to
say,
The updater is recommended for most Macintosh models but not for the
Performa series.
WHY NOT? I don't care about the update for 7.1, which I'm not using, but I
do care about the implication here that there is a more significant
difference between Performas and their traditional Mac counterparts than I
was aware of. I have been under the impression that the Performa 200 we
bought for my wife is EXACTLY & ABSOLUTELY identical to a Classic II,
except that it says "Performa" on the case and comes with the silly "At
Ease" software installed. I did notice, in the "About this Macintosh...."
dialog, that her system is numbered 7.0.1p, while mine (on my LC II) is
just 7.0.1 (no "p"). I assumed (without any good reason to do so, I admit)
that the "p" meant that At Ease had been installed on that machine.
Before I start giving my wife bad advice (or installing inappropriate
software on her machine), I'd be grateful if somebody could answer these
questions:
1) IS there a significant difference--presumably in the ROMS?
2) Does it mean I should do anything differently for her than I
would for myself & my LC II?
Thanks in advance.

I recently discovered an apparent limitation of PowerPoint 3.0 in

"PowerPoint relies on the printer driver to handle greyscale printing."
The same slides, imported into MacDraw Pro, print in greyscale. Does
anyone know of a way to print in greyscale directly from PowerPoint

Subject: Problem with A/B box and hardware handshake
Greetings all,
I have a Supra v.32bis modem hooked up to my modem port with the hardware
handshake cable. I recently acquired at a bargain an old MacRecorder. I'd
like to hook both of these up with an A/B type switch so that I won't have to
be plugging and unplugging the connectors all the time. I tried just hooking
it all up with a regular DIN-8 serial cable to the A/B box, then the modem
hardware handshake cable off one port and the MacRecorder off the other port,
but the modem ceased to work. Is this likely the switch, or do I need a more
specialized cable between the box and the modem port (I don't see how that
could be since that cable essentially just extends the 8 pins out to the
box).
Is the box maybe not switching all the pins or something? The MacRecorder
does
work in this setup, and I have hooked up a LaserDisc and a NEC PC-VCR with
this
switch with no problem.
Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

The following strange thing happens when I am reading a Word 5.0 file on my
PB180 :
When clicking the scroll arrow the first click will move the text by one line
only. It will also create a click sound inside the PowerBook as if a relay
changes its state. Continuous scrolling will not start until I click a second
time. Seemingly this happens only if I did not click on the scroll bar for
about a minute (?) or so. I am under the impression that this happens more
frequently when reaading a large file compared to a small one.
This problems occurs with both push buttons of the "mouse" so it should not
be a hardware problem.
It is also not the disk speeding up from resting....
Any suggestions ?

Subject: Textures and PostScript (C)
I must take issue with some recent statements concerning Textures by
Blue Sky Research.
In infomacv11-058 it was said that Textures does not use PostScipt, but
instead exclusively uses bitmapped fonts. This is not true!!!! Anyone
using a version of Textures released within the last 2 years has the
entire set of Computer Modern fonts (the font used by TeX) in PostScript.
I do not believe that is the problem the person with the printing
trouble is having. I would suggest they call Blue Sky Research and talk
to the tech support people (they are, by the way, excellent). They did
not mention what kind of Mac they were using, but I believe that the
Mac has to do all the rendering for the print job and if they are using
a dog (in a relative sense of course), then they may have to wait a long
time since you can create some pretty complex documents in TeX (all the
rendering when printing the HP they are using).
I have used both Textures and OzTeX and I much prefer the interface and
especially the speed of Textures. Lightning Textures (the most recent
release) is 2 to 3 times faster than OzTeX! I still highly recommend
OzTeX for those that can't afford Textures since TeX is such a fantastic
way to write. I do believe that Blue Sky has special student pricing
available now, so interested students may want to check that out (I am not
sure of this though. Call Blue Sky at (800) 622-8398).

This may be true for older installations of Textures, but recent (more than
one year) distributions bundle it with Postscript fonts and you need to have
Adobe Type Manager (ATM) in order to see the fonts on screen; so if you want
to print with an HP DeskWriter, I suppose this will also help you; I have
never done it, so I cannot guarantee any ilmprovement in speed. Using these
PostScript fonts also saves a lot of disk space. Moreover, the current version
of Textures (1.5, I believe) is significantly faster than previous ones, and
has several miscellaneous improvements (but also some small bugs).
Note that I have no connection with Blue Sky Research, Textures publishers.
Just (sort of) a satisfied user.
